What’s one of the biggest threats to your health data? Fraud? Ransomware? Bugs in the system? While they all can put your data at risk, we’re finding more and more that careless or poorly trained employees could be your largest concern.
According to the report In 2017, The Insider Threat Epidemic Begins by the Institute For Critical Infrastructure Technology, 31.5 percent of cybersecurity incidents in 2014 were perpetrated by malicious insiders, and 23.5 percent resulted from the activities of non-malicious insider threats. What’s more, these incidents have become so prevalent in our society that we’re desensitized to the true implications, making it that much more difficult to make security a top priority.
Despite all the innovation currently going on in our society, humans remain our strongest and weakest link in the quest for cybersecurity.
As the report states, one insider threat can jeopardize decades of work, inflict millions or even billions of dollars of harm, and impact millions of lives. That makes the job of securing up health data from these internal threats even more pressing.
There are three main types of insider threats:
Careless users who unintentionally violate security practices. This can be due to a lack of awareness, training, or creating safe and secure daily routines.
Negligent users who intentionally avoid security measures out of convenience, neglect, or misguided practices in an attempt to increase productivity. It’s all routine for these folks, even if it means compromising the data.
Malicious users who intentionally avoid security measures with something deeper in mind. They may want to profit financially, seek out revenge, or play whistleblower to something they disagree with.
In all cases, securing your health data starts with you.
It’s time to rethink your approach to security. It’s no longer all about protecting your vulnerable assets from risk. Instead, it’s about strengthening assets and making them more resilient to the overall process. It’s about delivering more value to the organization every step of the way.
It’s not about technology. It’s about transparent relationships and engagement between all levels, from the top down.
