It’s Your Data: Who Has The Key?

Businesses today are increasingly finding their data at risk. Technology is growing and changing all the time, and along with that comes the opportunity for security threats.

It’s not just the behemoths of the industry; even the smallest of companies have something to offer would-be criminals.

In the global marketplace, businesses need flexibility. They need to be able to communicate and share data freely with customers, employees, and third parties. They also need to be able to meet global regulations and policies. And so they are left with a dilemma.

  • Grow and try new tools or be left behind by the competition.
  • Keep data safe or pay the penalty.

The two are quickly morphing into one common goal. What’s a business to do?

It starts with physical location of the data.

Years ago, data resided with the company. Servers remained onsite or at a location designated by the company.

But a lot’s changed over the years. Today, your data can be in the hands of third-party services, residing in a cloud possibly halfway around the world. Onsite may have offered its own peace of mind, but cloud computing in some ways can provide even more safety - if handled properly.

Who is responsible for the data? Who should control the keys to the data? Who should ensure everything is safe?

Should it lie with the CIO?
Should it lie with the legal department?
Should it lie with a new breed of data privacy officers?

The responsibility can be influenced by a number of factors, including the organization’s size, sector, or scale. There never will be a one-size-fits-all approach.

It can be argued that whoever in the company is in charge of the data should also be responsible for the controls to encrypt the data and keep it safe. And whatever final approach is taken, control and efficiency will always be at the forefront, hand in hand.

Businesses are faced with a rapidly evolving threat landscape while onerous regulatory overheads continue to push accountability. It’s up to business heads to ensure the most secure and efficient method for taking control of data without limiting productivity.
